Scissor Chooser — Find Your Perfect Pair

Find Your Perfect Scissor

Answer four quick questions below — blade length, technique, handle shape, and hand — then match your profile to a recommended Haito scissor. All scissors feature Japanese stainless steel and convex blades for clean, effortless cuts.

Step 1 — Blade Length

Size Best for Typical technique Recommended products
5" Shorter fingers, precision detail work, textured cutting Point cutting, freehand, close detail
5.5" Most versatile — suits the widest range of stylists and hand sizes All-round salon cutting, blunt, point & slide
6" Longer reach, suits men's cutting, barbering, one-length bobs Scissor-over-comb, blunt cutting, long layers
6.5" Specialist long sections, experienced stylists Long layers, one-length, scissor-over-comb on thick hair
7" Barbering, club cutting, high-volume sections Barbering, bulk removal, scissor-over-comb

Quick size rule: Lay the scissor along your middle finger — the tip should sit roughly at your first knuckle. When in doubt, 5.5" suits most stylists.

Step 2 — Cutting or Thinning?

✂ Cutting Scissors

Solid blade on both sides. Creates clean, defined lines. Use for blunt cuts, graduation, layers, freehand, and point cutting.

All Haito Classic, Offset, Damascus & Basix scissors are cutting scissors.

〰 Thinning Scissors

One serrated (toothed) blade removes bulk and weight without a hard line. Use to soften ends, blend graduation, or reduce density.

New to thinning? A thinning scissor is a great addition to your kit once you have your main cutting scissor sorted — not a replacement for it.

Step 3 — Handle Design

Handle Finger position Best for Examples
Classic (Symmetrical) Both finger holes aligned; thumb ring sits directly in line with the blade Traditional grip, stylists used to school training scissors, those who prefer a higher thumb position
Offset Thumb ring sits lower and closer to the blade; arm and shoulder drop naturally Ergonomic cutting, reduced wrist and shoulder strain — recommended for full-time stylists and those with joint sensitivity

Not sure? If you cut hair daily and have ever felt tension in your shoulder or wrist, an offset handle is worth trying. Many stylists switch and never go back.

Step 4 — Hand Orientation

Right-Handed

All standard Haito scissors — Classic, Offset, Damascus, and Basix ranges — are designed for right-handed use.

LEFT HAND Left-Handed

Blades are ground in reverse so left-handed stylists can see the cut line clearly. Do not use right-handed scissors left-handed — it causes blade separation and hair folding.

Step 5 — Skill Level & Budget

Level What to look for Recommended starting point
Student / New Grad Durable, forgiving, easy to maintain. A kit with scissor + thinner is great value.
Qualified / Salon Stylist Ergonomics matter more at full-time hours. Consider offset handle. 5.5" is the sweet spot.
Senior / Specialist Premium steel, refined balance, Damascus pattern for collectors and those who want the best.
